Dussehra Gift Ideas

Dussehra festival or Dasara or Durga puja is a very popular Hindu festival celebrated in India. It is also known as Vijayadasami. Dussehra is the final day of Durga Puja of Navratri. It is a ten-day celebration, during which Ramlila, which is based on the epic story of the Ramayana. Struggle between the forces of good and evil, and the eventual victory of good over the evil, is the basic theme of Ramayana. There are a number of reasons for the celebration of Dussehra festival. The most popular reason for the celebration of Dussehra festival in northern India is that on this particular day Lord Rama killed the Ravanna, along with his young brother Lakshmana, killed all the demons and their king Ravana and regained Seta. Finally they returned to Ayodhya in Pushpaka Vimanam.

Dussehra festival held at Mysore is one of India's most colorful phenomena. The colorful Dussehra fair and festival of Kulu is also very famous. Usually, Dussehra falls in the months of September or October for every year. Dussehra 2018 is on October 19, Friday. On this day, people from all over the country will take part in the occasion in their own manner.

According to another story Dussehra festival is taken in the epic Mahabharata, Pandavas (five sons of Pandu) used to lay aside their divine and powerful weapons during the exile (Vanvaas). They concealed their weapons under the shami tree, located near the place of their dwelling. As each year ends of the exile, Pandavas came to the shami tree to see the safety of their weapons. Whenever Pandavas approached the tree, they worshipped it and Goddess Durga. At the end of exile, the Pandavas went to the shami tree to get their weapons and went to the battle field to fight the Kauravas, their opponents. Pandavas won the battle on the day of dashmi. On this day, good had achieved victory over the evil thus it came to be known as Vijayadasami. After this it became a tradition that people hug each other under the shami tree and exchange its leaves. On Dussehra 2018 as well this tradition will be followed to make the future promising.

Dussehra and Vijayadashmi are also the occassion when one seeks the blessings of one's elders. Its a time honoured tradition to greet all your near and dear ones and exchange gifts.

Gift Ideas for Dussehra:

Sweets:

Sweets play a major role in Hindu festival. Giving sweets as a gift shows the eagerness on the part of the giver to share the festive merriment with the receiver. It is an age-old manner of celebrating a festival. It can well be said that sweets truly complete the celebration of every joyful Hindu festival. You can either buy a single type of sweets or a mixed pack containing different kinds of sweets. These days, many shops offer readymade sweets in beautiful packs enveloped with gift wrappers. In case you cannot decide on any other gift, a big sweet pack will be the perfect Dasara present for your friends, relatives and acquaintances.

Jewellery:

Ornaments are the most precious gifts for women and Dasara is one of those special event for which you can buy jewellery for a woman you close to - your mother, sister, wife or sweetheart. Silver or gold pendants, bangles, bracelets or necklace are good gifts.

Silver/Gold Coins:

Dasara is primarily a religious occassion and you would do well to gift religious gift items like gold or silver coins featuring images of Goddess Durga, Goddess Lakshmi or Maa Shakti. These are quite popular gifts and are supposed to bring happiness and prosperity to the homes of the recipient. Besides these, you can gift other auspicious items such as Mata ki Chunrees, Mata ka Chattar, Goddess' Murti (idols), Rudraksha Lockets etc.

Apparels:

The safest and most indispensable gift for any festive occassion. Everywhere across the world you can find people wearing and gifting new dresses to their close ones to celebrate an occassion. While traditional dresses like Sarees, Chaniya Cholis and Bandhani Lehanga (for women) and Dhoti Kurta/Pyjama kurta or Sherwani (for men) are considered good festive gifts, it is best to think about the tastes of your recipients and make the purchases accordingly. You can even go for the latest designer clothes from popular brands which, these days, are quite a hit with young men and women.
