Dussehra festival or Dasara or Durga puja is a very popular Hindu festival celebrated in India. It is also known as Vijayadasami. Dussehra is the final day of Durga Puja of Navratri. It is a ten-day celebration, during which Ramlila, which is based on the epic story of the Ramayana. Struggle between the forces of good and evil, and the eventual victory of good over the evil, is the basic theme of Ramayana. There are a number of reasons for the celebration of Dussehra festival. The most popular reason for the celebration of Dussehra festival in northern India is that on this particular day Lord Rama killed the Ravanna, along with his young brother Lakshmana, killed all the demons and their king Ravana and regained Seta. Finally they returned to Ayodhya in Pushpaka Vimanam.
Dussehra festival held at Mysore is one of India's most colorful phenomena. The colorful Dussehra fair and festival of Kulu is also very famous. Usually, Dussehra falls in the months of September or October for every year. Dussehra 2022 is on October 5th, Wednesday. On this day, people from all over the country will take part in the occasion in their own manner.
According to another story Dussehra festival is taken in the epic Mahabharata, Pandavas (five sons of Pandu) used to lay aside their divine and powerful weapons during the exile (Vanvaas). They concealed their weapons under the shami tree, located near the place of their dwelling. As each year ends of the exile, Pandavas came to the shami tree to see the safety of their weapons. Whenever Pandavas approached the tree, they worshipped it and Goddess Durga. At the end of exile, the Pandavas went to the shami tree to get their weapons and went to the battle field to fight the Kauravas, their opponents. Pandavas won the battle on the day of dashmi. On this day, good had achieved victory over the evil thus it came to be known as Vijayadasami. After this it became a tradition that people hug each other under the shami tree and exchange its leaves. On Dussehra 2022 as well this tradition will be followed to make the future promising.
Dussehra and Vijayadashmi are also the occassion when one seeks the blessings of one's elders. Its a time honoured tradition to greet all your near and dear ones and exchange gifts.
